About Daniel Cox: Why Garbage?

A Moment of Random Epiphany

Welcome to my blog. I’m Daniel Cox and I’m doing my BSc Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology (Special) at the University of the West Indies (UWI). I am doing a course called ESST 1004 – Science Communication which provides students with the help needed to develop effective skills in scientific communication, relevant to research and employment. It’s a lot…I know. The course requires me to create a blog on an environmental topic, so here I am. The topic I chose is Waste Management in the Caribbean and my subtopic for this blog is the Hierarchy of Waste Management Solutions and though I never really considered myself an advocate for it, hear me out.

I’m sure that you’re familiar with the family/comedy Evan Almighty and if you’re not, then you should give it a watch. It’s based on Noah and the ark from the bible. I’m not super religious but like I said, it’s a comedy. An underlying theme in that movie was an “Act of Random Kindness” (ARK) could change the world. Nice idea but for me, I usually have a Moment of Random Epiphany (MORE).

With that, one morning I woke up and decided that my family and I were going to start recycling. My mother usually buys 4 cases of water a week, so it was perfect. I went to her with the plan and she just declined…apparently, it’s too much work to carry bags of plastic bottles to an iCare bin. My newly found passion for recycling didn’t take that well so I had a change of heart. Instead, I suggested that we all buy water bottles and a jug to filter water. Care to wager what her response was to that? Well, I’m sure you lost your money because I was met with, “That’s too much of a hassle because I would be the one always refilling the jug because you all would leave it empty.” Now obviously I told her that made zero sense but in truth, she was right. With that, my hour of being an Environmental Studies professional was over. I carried on with life but did start using a water bottle from that day on.

I started UWI in September 2023, but this conversation between my mother and I took place in the middle of August. I’m from Marabella but to make life easier for me to get to and from school, I moved in with my eldest brother and his family in Cascade. Not one week yet into university, I received a video call from my mother, who was excited to show me her new purple, one gallon water bottle and a filter jug. I felt good about that and so my random epiphany turned into a something I’m truly passionate about. I think my mother just realized that I wouldn’t be home to leave that jug empty as she said but little does she know, every weekend I spend in Marabella I’ll be sure to prove her right.

More Garbage: The Hierarchy of Waste Management Solutions

The Nitty-gritty Now that we’re acquainted, I think it’s time we get into the nitty-gritty. Now, I can only imagine you all reading my blog and to be honest nitty-gritty is so fun to say but even I’m sitting here associating it with boring information I’m about to unload. So how can I keep you all engaged? At the end of the day, this is just me talking about garbage and who cares about that? Like I said, I’m not really an advocate…or at least I just didn’t have my Moment of Random Epiphany (MORE) for the day. I only had a cup of tea so maybe I should come back tomorrow…sounds good to me. DEADLINE. Nothing motivates a student like a deadline so scratch that idea because we are getting into the details now. So, we need to talk about the Hierarchy of Waste Management Solutions. It ranks waste management options according to what has the best outcome for the environment. (Williams, 2021). The methods outlined in this hierarchy are key to sustainable material management.
